Leigh Wood fights Mauricio Lara in a main event match at Nottingham’s Motorpoint Arena tonight, hometown fighter defending the WBA featherweight title against his Mexican opponent.
Wood last fought in the same place as himself in March. He retained the title by knocking out Michael Conlan in the 12th round – knockout contender of the year This came after the 34-year-old had recovered from being knocked down and fought from behind on the scorecards. It was a third straight stoppage win for the Briton, who in the process raised his record to 26-2 (16 KOs).
Meanwhile, Lara (25-2-1, 18 KOs) last competed in October, stopping Jose Sanmartin in the third round in Mexico City. The result marked the 24-year-old’s second, third-round victory in a row, and he will seek another early finish as he enters enemy territory this evening.
