The underworld has become a little more populated The Hollywood Reporter confirming that Willem Dafoe has joined the Beetlejuice sequel after A giant stupid robot was the first to publish this news. Production on the sequel to the Tim Burton horror comedy officially began last week.

The casting of the film is in full swing Monica Bellucci joining the role of the obnoxious wife of Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton), it was announced on Thursday. Jenna Ortega will play Lydia Dietz’s daughter in the film, played again by Winona Ryder. Catherine O’Hara is also among the returning cast, and Justin Theroux will be one of the brand new additions.

Burton will return to direct and produce the sequel, as well as Brad Pitt’s Plan B. The screenplay was written by Al Gough and Miles Millar, creators of the Ortega-starring Wednesday Netflix series and the Superman prequel series Smallville.

While the actual details of the film’s plot are currently being kept under wraps, it has been confirmed that Dafoe will play an underworld cop of sorts. In the first movie, we got to see some of the inner workings of the afterlife and how it’s run with all its red tape and bureaucracy.

The sequel to Beetlejuice, now simply called Beetlejuice 2, is slated for a September 2024 release.
