THE World Cup is here, but some key stars are missing from the flamboyant tournament.
One player who missed the action is Liverpool’s star man Mohamed Salah.
Salah has scored six goals so far in the Premier League this season and Liverpool are currently outside the top four.
The 30-year-old has an impressive national team record of 47 goals and 25 assists in just 84 games, but he won’t be able to add to his World Cup tally.
Why isn’t Mo Salah playing in the World Cup?
Salah will not be in the World Cup as Egypt did not qualify for the tournament.
The African side fell in the final hurdle of qualifying after losing to Senegal on penalties.
A penalty from Salah’s former Liverpool teammate Sadio Mane eliminated Egypt.
Missing the penalty in the conflict, Salah hit his eyes with laser beams while trying to score the penalty.
The controversial end to Egypt’s World Cup hopes means the Egyptian captain will have to watch all the action from home this year.
This wasn’t Mane’s first heartbreak from his former striker partner in the Senegalese striker who scored the winning penalty against Egypt in the Africa Cup of Nations final less than two months ago.
Has Mo Salah played in the World Cup before?
Salah was included in Egypt’s squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
He played in two of his country’s matches in the tournament and managed to score in both, despite Egypt losing in both cases.
The striker was in no condition to play in the first game of the tournament after being injured after a mess with Sergio Ramos in the Champions League final.
Egypt withdrew from the 2018 World Cup in the group stages after losing all three of their matches.
