Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, millions of people have died across Europe and the rest of the world.
And while deaths from COVID-19 have fallen significantly since countries began introducing vaccines, excess deaths have not disappeared within the European Union.
More people died in the EU in July and August 2022 than in the same period in 2020 and 2021.
There are two main theories as to why this is happening: heat waves and health care backlogs created during the pandemic.
