As the World Cup kicks off in Qatar tonight, a new set of glamorous wives and girlfriends have popped up to support their man.
In recent years, however, the England team has been given much stricter rules for their wives to follow, so it’s unlikely we’ll see the party levels witnessed at the infamous tournament in Baden-Baden, Germany in 2006, when the WAGs went wild.
Their horrific stories of drugs, their dancing at the tables, and very high hotel bills rocked the tranquil resort town and probably made more headlines than the Three Lions’ performance on the field – they were eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Victoria Beckham was often pictured alongside Cheryl from Girls Aloud, who married Ashley Cole a few weeks later.
Coleen Rooney was 20 at the time and had not yet married Wayne.
She was already famous for her love of fashion and was rumored to be one of the group who collected a £57,000 bill after an hour of shopping therapy.
In fact, it was so eventful that the participation of wives and girlfriends was greatly restricted at the 2010 World Cup.
But Victoria, Cheryl, and Coleen aside, what happened to the other women?
We take a look at the WAG class of 2006…
Alex Curran, 40
Spouse: Steven Gerrard
Then Alex had been dating Steven for four years before the World Cup and was one of the WAGs who used his credit card well.
He is said to have paid a £25,000 hotel bill containing 60 bottles of the £75 pink champagne.
Now she and Steven got married the following summer and are now parents of three daughters and a son, Lilly-Ella, 18, Lexie, 16, Lourdes, 11, and Lio, five.
In 2015, Steven moved to the US after signing an 18-month deal with LA Galaxy.
They returned to England the following year after feeling homesick, however, and Steven was recently sacked as Aston Villa’s manager.
Carly Zucker, 38
Husband: Joe Cole
She later became known for walking past the paparazzi in the early mornings in scrawny cropped tops.
Her clothes were said to have angered Posh, who reportedly felt he was stealing all the attention.
Now Carly has starred in I’m A Celebrity! In 2008, he only became the third person to be voted on.
The following year she married Joe and they had seven children, Ruby, 12, Harry, 10, and Max.
After Joe retired from football in 2018, the duo remained out of the limelight.
Michaela Henderson-Thynne, 36
Partner: Stewart Downing
Then she sang karaoke about her man at Garibaldi’s nightclub and loved her designer shopping.
She admitted she has “a thing for expensive handbags”.
Now Michaela went on to star in the ITV2 show WAGs Boutique in 2007, where she tearfully announced to her WAG friends: “Unfortunately, we broke up after four years together. But we’re still friends.”
She is no longer in the public eye, a mother of two.
Elen Rivas, 47
Partner: Frank Lampard
The Spanish model started dating Frank in 2002 and gave birth to their daughter, Luna, in 2005.
He made a name for himself in Baden-Baden after shouting Gloria Gaynor’s I Will Survive song while standing on a table.
Now Elen and Frank have a daughter, Isla, but the couple broke up in 2008.
The footballer is now married to TV presenter Christine Lampard, while Elen has been dating businessman Dino Costas since 2017 and runs her own home organization company, La Organizer.
Toni Poole, 41
Husband: John Terry
Later officially the most forgiving woman in England, Toni sided with John after rumors surfaced in 2010 that his teammate was having an affair with his ex-girlfriend, Vanessa Perroncel, costing him the England captaincy.
Now Toni has twins, 16-year-old Georgie from Summer and John.
She enjoys horseback riding and has published a fitness and healthy lifestyle book.
Lisa is rude, 35
Husband: Michael Carrick
Then there were rumors that the “silent one”, who is known to go a little crazy when drinking, kissed Carly Zucker after a night of drinking.
Now a Pilates teacher with a business degree.
Lisa maintains a low profile, but is still a constant support for Michael after meeting them in middle school.
Abbey Clancy, 36
Husband: Peter Crouch
Then, just months into their relationship, Abbey flew in to support Peter.
However, he was sent home in disgrace soon after old photos of his cocaine use resurfaced.
Peter tried to get away from the drama and left her.
Now Abbey and Peter reconciled and married in 2011 and welcomed daughter Sophia that same year.
Liberty was seven, Johnny was four, and Jack was three.
Abbey has also had a successful TV and modeling career.
Vanessa Perroncel, 46
Partner: Wayne Bridge
Then Vanessa, who was pregnant with her son Jaydon at the time, kept a low profile throughout the tournament.
Now, all hell broke loose when Vanessa and Wayne broke up in 2009 and she was accused of having an affair with John Terry – she denies it.
Wayne is now married to Frankie Bridge and the couple have two sons.
Vanessa was briefly linked to Cheryl’s second husband, Jean-Bernard Fernandez-Versini.
