Hundreds of people took part in a protest in Belgrade on Sunday in which they tried to draw attention to the high air pollution in Serbia.

Organizers of the event said that toxic air kills thousands of people in Serbia every year and demanded that the authorities take measures to improve air quality.

Earlier this year, weeks of roadblocks forced authorities to scrap Rio Tinto’s lithium mining project in western Serbia.

The protest in the center of Belgrade is the latest in a series of rallies organized by the increasingly visible environmental movement in that Balkan country.
