More than 1,000 protesters gathered in Tunisia’s second city of Sfax on Thursday to express their frustration over an ongoing waste crisis exacerbated by a landfill fire that is polluting the city’s air.

Garbage has been piling up on the streets of Sfax for months, while available landfills reach capacity. The local population is forced to burn their own waste.

Protesters, including waste pickers, gathered outside the provincial government headquarters chanting: “Sfax is forgotten, trash is eating it up in every street.”

They demanded the resignation of the governor of Sfax, Fakher Fakhfakh, who the previous day tried to reduce the danger of a fire at a landfill near the city’s port.
