Workers at the world’s largest Apple iPhone factory were beaten and detained during protests over contract disputes amid virus checks, according to employees and videos posted on social media on Wednesday.
The footage appears to show thousands of masked people facing lines of police in white hazmat suits with plastic riot shields in the central city of Zhengzhou.
One person was hit in the head with a bat, and the other was taken away with his hands behind his back. The second video shows a group of ten police officers surrounding one person and beating them to the ground with batons.
Earlier this month, Chinese authorities imposed a strict seven-day Covid-19 lockdown in the area around the factory after infections rose in Zhengzhou and workers left the factory.
Social media posts claimed the workers were protesting an unspecified breach of contract.
