Spain coach Sergio Scariolo tweeted on Friday, “This isn’t exactly a new title and probably won’t be retained for very long, but it’s something so unique, prestigious and historic that I’m extremely proud of everyone who contributed to it.” .

FIBA’s ranking was changed in 2017 and now takes into account the results of the last eight years.

The adjustments mean Team USA can no longer make a living off of things like the 2014 World Cup championship, but more recent successes like the gold medal won at the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo are still influential in the rankings.

The USA finished the 2019 World Cup in seventh place.
