MANILA, Philippines — James Spencer treated his mom to a sweet shooting night after scoring a career-high 19 points by beating the University of the Philippines Far East in the UAAP Season 85 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart Araneta Coliseum on Thursday.
Inspired by his mother watching from the stands at the Big Dome, Spencer fired 13-on-7 from the field, including four three-pointers, to give the Fighting Maroons their 10th win in 11 games.
“It’s always good to have my family here. I always look in the stands and make sure he sees him. It was special to have my mom here,” said Spencer, who also had three rebounds and a steal.
But Spencer stressed that, aside from her mom’s extra motivation, anyone at UP can excel at any game.
“Any night, anyone can show up for any amount of points. I’m happy to be me today,” he said after the 73-59 win.
UP coach Goldwin Monteverde praised Spencer for transforming the good looks in the ball movement that also led to the Maroons’ hot start in the first half.
“He shot really well today, as James said. The ball was moving well and I think his teammates called him in the first half, he was getting the ball and he delivered it,” said Monteverde.
