Hey Xbox fans! The Callisto Protocol Launching tomorrow is the all-new Riot Mode, an exciting new experience for players that focuses on defeating as many enemies as possible. In riot mode, you’ll face wave after wave of enemies, facing increasingly difficult challenges. To add to the fun, you can earn credits that you can use to purchase upgrades and loot from crates scattered throughout the arena. I recently spoke with level designer Kevin Jazanovits and senior systems engineer Philip Green, some of the people behind The Callisto Protocol all new Riot Mode to learn more about this exciting new mode.
Riot mode brings a different flavor The Callisto Protocol basic elements. To achieve this, the developers had to break some of the rules of the main game and push their previous projects in different directions.
“We wanted to make this mode feel more like an arcade game than a horror game, to make it more fun,” Jazanovits explains.
Jazanowitz’s goal as a level designer was to create an environment where players could run from room to room feeling constantly chased and surrounded by enemies. “We tried to remove or adjust the gameplay elements that slowed the player down,” he says.
Green adds, “Our goal was to create a simple, fun gameplay loop, but with secondary value that would allow players to come up with new strategies over multiple play sessions. This leads to several different systems that empower players over time so they can find their style and power through waves of infected.”
Riot mode features enemy behavior and wave formations that keep players in the mood. As you progress through the game, you’ll need to adapt your strategies to overcome each new challenge. With only two weapon slots available, you’ll also need to spend credits wisely to upgrade and modify weapons, as well as unlock containers of health, GRP, and fuses. And when the going gets really tough, turn on frenzy mode for a temporary effect with unlimited ammo, GRP usage, and instant enemy kills.
“We wanted to delve deeper into just having fun killing,” Green says. “So we used as many features as we could to add to the game that made it feel like a fun fight. By empowering the player with powerful weapons (and) giving them additional benefits that will allow them to take their battles to the next level.”
To add to the arcade feel, Riot Mode includes a scoring system based on kills and dismemberments, with an overall score that tracks the player’s progress throughout the game. “I can hit the 30s fairly consistently, but some of our quality testers have broken 100 waves. It’s great to see our team members posting their high scores in our internal chats. You have to show the receipts if you want to brag,” says Jashanovits.
Riot Mode is a challenging and fun experience that will keep you engaged for hours. The focus on maintaining constant and fluid combat, as well as the introduction of fun subsystems and a simple gameplay cycle, make it a great addition to The Callisto Protocol. It is available on May 23, 2022 as part of the bundled Riot Bundle Callisto Protocol Digital Deluxe Edition, Season Pass or available for purchase separately.
