Movie of 2018 Spider-Man: Into the Universe should not exist. It goes against everything we’ve come to expect from superhero movies and the big studio system behind them. He is animated when the others are alive. This is Miles Morales, not Peter Parker. It also has more than one Spider-Man, but seven of them (two of which is Peter Parker, although he is a supporting character at best). It doesn’t draw inspiration from a classic Spider-Man story, but rather is one of the more complicated and dumb ones, with Spider-Man working with all the other Spider-Men from other Marvel Earths. It’s a weird movie. It’s a really, really good, weird movie though. It uses its awesomeness to tell a compelling story about responsibility, family, and self-reliance that works as well, if not better, than any previous Spider-Man film.
It is not only a great film but also a commercial success. It was pretty good for Sony Pictures, despite being an animated picture not aimed directly at kids. On a budget of $90 million, Spider-Verse grossed $384 million. He also sits on top of other spiders among critics with a 97% new rating, higher than any other Spider-Man movie. The closest are Spider-Man 2 and Spider-Man: No Way Homeeach of which contains 93% freshness.
So we’re looking forward to seeing what happens with the sequel, which will introduce Spider-Man 2099, Miguel O’Hara, as well as Spider-Woman, Spider-Punk, and a bunch of other favorites.
