Blizzard announced this week that it is abandoning Overwatch 2’s long-awaited PvE element: Hero Missions. These recurring story missions will use a talent system where Heroes will level up and gain access to new abilities. While PvE items and missions will appear as seasonal content, many members of the Overwatch community are unhappy with the complete abandonment of the mode, with many speculating that the “2” in Overwatch 2 hangs over the game’s PvE.

In this week’s Spot On, Lucy and Tham discuss the ways multiplayer games have tried, succeeded, and failed to tell compelling stories, and suggest ways the Overwatch 2 team could explore storytelling in the future.

Spot On is a weekly news show that airs every Friday, featuring GameSpot Editor-in-Chief Tamur Hussain and Senior Producer Lucy James on the latest in gaming. Given the extremely dynamic and never-ending news cycle of the large video game industry, there’s always something to talk about, but unlike most other news shows, Spot On delves into one topic rather than summarizing all the news. Spot On is published every Friday.
