A shooting at a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, on Tuesday night resulted in multiple deaths, according to local authorities.
The gunman is among the dead, the city of Chesapeake tweeted Tuesday.
“Chesapeake Police have confirmed an active shooter incident with a fatality at the Walmart on Sam’s Circle. The shooter is dead.”
Leo Kosinski, spokesman for the police department, said short press conference that the police received a report of a shooting at 10 p.m. and arrived to find more dead bodies.
It is not clear how many people died, but Kosinski said “no more” than 10 people were killed. He did not believe the police had fired any shots and did not know if the shooter was a store worker.
The city has set up a reunion venue at the Chesapeake Conference Center to bring together family members of those who may have been present at the Walmart.
Virginia State Senator Louise Lucas said she was “absolutely devastated that the latest mass shooting in America happened at a Walmart in my district in Chesapeake, Virginia.”
“I will not stop until we find solutions to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country that has claimed so many lives.”
