Today we celebrate the release of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales on PC! Like the PC version of Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered released earlier this year, it was a close collaboration with Insomniac Games, Marvel Games and PlayStation. We’re thrilled to bring the adventures of Miles Morales to a new audience and let PC players experience Miles’ rise as the new Spider-Man.

Configurability and personalization are key aspects of PC gaming. At Nixxes, we want the game to be a joy to play on a wide variety of systems, from handheld devices to high-end gaming PCs with the latest GPUs and ultra-wide monitors. Part of this was to make Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales playable with a variety of input options. You can play with a controller and there are many options to choose from. You can use the DualSense controller for PS5 with a USB wired connection to enjoy all the features of the DualSense controller, including adaptive trigger feedback and haptic feedback. The game also supports many other peripherals and countless remapping options via Steam Input. The game can also be fully played with a mouse and keyboard, and an important part of this development was the creation of a default control scheme that allows players to feel like they are in full control of them when spinning webs at high speed or engaging in spectacular battles against enemies with Miles. ‘ electric power.

To give you more information on how the mouse and keyboard were implemented in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, I’d like to introduce you to Bart Veldstra, Senior Systems Programmer at Nixxes.

“When we start working on mouse and keyboard controls, we first look at comparable games and our own previous projects. These also include third-person adventure games, so they give us a good idea of ​​what we’ve tried and tested. We then make an inventory of all the actions that the player can take in the game, which actions happen most often, and what combinations are possible.”

What follows is a one-on-one comparison. “We just assign all the gamepad buttons to a key or button on the keyboard and mouse. For this first layout, we’re using key bindings that are commonly found in games, such as the WASD keys for movement and E and F for actions or attacks.”

The team then starts playing around with this base mapping to see where there might be any potential problems, Bart explains: “One of the first problems that came up was the fact that you have to press two buttons to make the finishing move. On a gamepad, it’s easy, and gamers are used to it. On the keyboard, which is a fairly complex instrument, it doesn’t make much sense.”

“Based on this experience, we decided to make special keyboard bindings for actions that use two buttons on a gamepad, such as Finisher, Web Strike, Yank & Throw, and Zip to Point. This simplifies these relatively complex actions.”

This is possible due to the sheer number of keys on the keyboard, but it’s important to strike a balance when adding extra keys, says Bart: “In Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, Miles has five abilities. If we add them as new keybindings on top of existing actions, we run the risk of players having to reach further for buttons to press them. We’ve taken a step back to take a look at what Miles’ abilities are doing. They are a modifier to your standard abilities, so we decided to put their trigger as a modifier on the right mouse button. When you hold down the right mouse button and press a key for an action such as punch or jump, you will activate the option. This way we don’t overload players with extra keys.”

It’s not always easy to find a one-size-fits-all solution when dealing with mouse and keyboard layouts. The large number of abilities and actions that players have in both Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales proved to be a challenge, Bart says, “For example, we juggled the Dodge action. This is mapped to the Control key, but how well this works depends on the size of your hand. We decided to keep this binding, but also added an alternative binding to the side mouse button. If you have a gaming mouse with extra buttons, Dodge on the side button works really well.”

The purpose of default key mapping is to make the most important features of the game most effective. With customizable keyboard shortcuts, you can play Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales the way you want. Bart: “We want people to not have to twist their fingers when fiddling with the keyboard and mouse, but you can remap any key you want. If you have a fancy mouse with lots of buttons, you can play the whole game using just your mouse.”
