Gaethje last fought for the second time in his career in May as he was unsuccessfully battling for the undisputed lightweight title.
The 34-year-old American was delivered by Charles Oliveira in the first round after being knocked down by the Brazilian.
In 2020, Gaethje won the interim belt by stopping Tony Ferguson, but failed to secure the uncontested gold that year as he was presented by Khabib Nurmagomedov.
