MANILA, Philippines—More than a year after his last in the ring, John Riel Casimero will return with a new episode this year.

Casimero will fight former Japanese title contender Ryo Akaho in a super bantamweight match on December 3 in Incheon, South Korea.

According to boxingscene.com. The fight was officially announced on Monday by the Treasure Boxing Promotion.

Casimero, 33, has not fought since his split decision against Guillermo Rigondeaux in August last year to retain the WBO bantamweight title.

A lot has changed since Casimero went into decline.

Casimero (31-4, 21knockout) was supposed to defend the belt against Paul Butler in December 2021 but did not come to the scales, citing gastritis.

The match was postponed to April 2022 in Liverpool, England, but Casimero got in trouble after violating the strict medical guidelines of the British Boxing Control Board (BBBofC) for using a sauna to lose weight before a fight.

The WBO stripped Casimero of the 118-pound title in May.

His upcoming fight against Akaho (39-2-2, 26knockout) offers Casimero a golden opportunity to turn a new leaf.
