ENGLAND’s oldest rugby player has celebrated his 75th birthday and has promised to continue fighting into his 80s.

Brian Sampson shows up every Saturday despite being three times older than most of his playmates.

Now semi-retired after a career in agriculture, Brian began playing at school and was a fullback with the Leicester Tigers in 1965.

The father of two children, who has a grandchild, played 56 seasons and played nearly 2,000 matches.

But retirement is not on his mind. “I know I won’t go on forever, but I don’t know when to stop.

“For now, all I can think about is the game that will be played next Saturday.”

After a spell in Nigeria, he joined Oakham RFC in the East Midlands on his return to England in the late 1980s and hasn’t missed a season since.

Now in second place in the club’s second XV, he turned 75 on 2 November.

He admits to slowing down despite a glass of pumpkin tonic mixed with a pre-match energy drink.

But she said: “I love it and it keeps me young.”
