Take a deep breath! Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengeance Of the Slayer comes out on June 1 with Game Pass dropping at the same time. It’s a vintage shooter set in the same retro-futuristic universe as the Hypnospace Outlawbut this time the spotlight is on fan-favorite Zane Lofton, who actually “created” Slayers X in the game’s fiction.

Badass dude Zane “Zane_Rocks_14” Lofton started making the shooter way back in 1999, when he was probably enamored with Doom and other violent shooters of the era. Two decades later, Zane “Zane_Rocks_36” Lofton found his lost CD and completed his childhood project, aka Slayers X.

This is how the story unfolds in the game. In fact, the developers of Tendershoot are returning to their 90s-inspired world, this time with fast-paced shooting, rather than the alternate reality of web surfing Hypnospace. You’ll make enemies explode, find secret paths, and do other totally ridiculous things that teenagers who drink Mountain Dew like. Come on man.

“The X-Men are a chillingly accurate representation of what a mid-2000s teenager thought was cool,” Liam said in his Slayers X preview. “There are stupid jokes. Excessive blood. Butt rock soundtrack. Hidden in Zane’s closet is an elevator that goes down to his secret base. Your shields are called Hack Blood. Pure devotion to the game bit makes it enjoyable, sort of, when it could so easily come across as annoying. Perhaps some subtext will help with this.

“It’s definitely a reason to make a kid’s shooter,” said series creator Jay Tolen wrote, “but it’s also about class and what cards made by a poor kid with a not-so-easy life might look like.” In fact, ordinary places can turn into something completely foreign in Zane’s imagination. It’s a nice framing device that can give us some insight into the character’s somewhat sad upbringing, as well as an excuse to hurl equal baddies at us.

The fictional Zane also keeps tweeting about a game he didn’t actually make. In one memepost, he tells Xbox head Phil Spencer that he’s been hacked, which is why Slayers X is coming to Game Pass. “Welcome” is extremely good for the character, even if the grammar gives me goosebumps.

Anyway, Slayers X: Terminal Aftermath: Vengance Of The Slayer is coming steam and Game Pass next month on June 1st. Hypnospace Outlaw also gets a more direct sequel in form Dreamsettler.
