After several delays, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is finally here – and ahead of its release later this year, developer Daedelic Entertainment has shared a new look at its hidden action in a new gameplay trailer.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, in case you hadn’t suspected, blazes something of an unusual path through Middle-earth, leading its wide-eyed protagonist on an adventure that promises moments of both “subtle tactical stealth” and “fast-paced action.” parkour action” on a combination of open levels and more linear missions.

This journey — which takes place before the events of The Lord of the Rings, timeline fans — will cover familiar terrain from the mountains of Mordor to Grimwood. And all of this is laced with an intriguing overarching narrative element that will affect gameplay situations, dialogue, even animations and sound depending on whether players prefer Gollum or Smeagol.

We had different things glimpses The Lord of Rings: Gollum since its announcement back in 2019 – plus, Eurogamer’s Victoria Kennedy had to witness most of the game in May last year – and Daedelic’s latest trailer offers a mix of old and new. It’s nice, but (at least in my opinion) it looks a lot more refined this time around.

It’s anyone’s guess how this will play out, but I’m hoping that the unusual approach that Daedelic (a studio best known for their point-and-click adventures) takes on Tolkien’s universe and one of its most intriguing characters will pay off in a big way. All will be revealed when The Lord of the Rings: Gollum launches on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S and Switch later this year.
