If you’ve ever come across vaults in Fortnite, you’ve probably noticed that they’ve historically required you and some friends to stand still and scan to access the goodies inside. Well, all that has changed with the introduction of keys in Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 4, which will now need to be collected before you can open vaults. This time, the vaults are filled with much better loot, but they will require you to do some searching. Here’s how to get vault keys in Fortnite and then, of course, how to use them.

Where to find keys in Fortnite

Fortnite keys can be found as random loot, which can be good or bad. This means you won’t have to travel to specific locations and fight for those much sought after keys, but it also means there’s no surefire way to find them in any given round. We found our first key as loot near the suddenly empty reality tree. In any case, whenever you find a random key, you will be in step two: know what to do with it.

Fortnite vaults and how to use keys

Once you find the key, several lock symbols will appear on your map throughout the island. They represent the location of the vaults. You can go to any of them, but pay attention to the number of keys you need. Single keyhole lock icon means you only need one keybut some vaults need more and are marked on your map accordingly.

The number of keys you are holding at any one time is listed to the right of the game’s UI, next to your inventory. Oddly enough, right now it seems that using a key returns it to your inventory, meaning you could theoretically run from vault to vault opening multiple of them with the same key or keys. It’s unclear if this is intentional or part of a season launch bug that will be fixed soon, but we’ll update it as soon as we know more.

You cannot see the location of the vaults until you have the key in your inventory.

In any case, vaults that require multiple keys to open have even better loot than single-key vaults, but even those single-key vaults are full of great stuff. We’ve found three rare chests, a ton of ammo, kegs of Slurp Juice, and more in each one we’ve opened so far, so these vaults are clearly better than last season’s vaults, which tended to yield a handful of rare loot. not the legendary stuff they’re currently giving away.
