Five people were killed and 18 injured in a shooting at a gay nightclub Saturday night in Colorado Springs, Colorado, police said.

The suspect was in custody and being treated for injuries after the attack at Club Q, Colorado Springs Lt. Pamela Castro told reporters at a briefing after the attack.

Police received the first phone call just before midnight about the shooting, Castro said.

On its Facebook page, Club Q released a statement in the early hours of Sunday morning saying it was “devastated by the senseless attack on our community”.

“We are grateful for the quick reactions of heroic customers who subdued the attacker and ended this hateful attack.”

Club Q describes itself as “an adult-oriented gay and lesbian nightclub that hosts themed nights such as karaoke, drag shows and DJs.”

The Colorado Springs Police Department says it will detain press conference at 16:00 CET on Sunday for another update.
