Canada put on a show in their return to the World Cup after a 36-year absence, but failed to capitalize on their chances in a gutsy 1-0 loss to Belgium.

Canada had a glorious chance to score their first goal of the World Cup to take the lead in the 10th minute, only for Belgian goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois to save Alphonso Davies’ penalty attempt after Yannick Carrasco was booked for handball.

Michy Batshuayi calmed down the pro-Canadian crowd in the 44th minute, dropping a long ball that Canada’s Steven Vitoria almost failed to catch with his foot.

Batshuayi outpaced the chasing Kamal Miller and Richie Larye and calmly beat Canadian goalkeeper Milan Borjan for a 1-0 lead.

Borjan rejected the ball in disgust.
