In IMAX, Fast X grossed $22 million on 1,545 such huge screens worldwide, making it the second-biggest global IMAX opening for the franchise, behind Fate of the Furious. It’s an impressive opening weekend in an era when theaters are still recovering from the devastating effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the second best opening of 2023. In total, the entire franchise has now grossed over $5 billion at the international box office.
As for which markets enjoyed the return of the Toretto family to the big screen, China led the way with $78.3 million over the weekend there, followed by Mexico with $16.7 million and France with $9.6 million dollars
Even Vin Diesel and a turbocharged muscle car can’t match Nintendo as Super Mario Bros. still has the best opening of the year. Fast X did manage to drop Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 , which is now in its third week in theaters, with the latest Marvel film dropping to second place.
Although the box office is currently positive, The critical reception of the film was mixed. Fast X has an overall score of 55 on Metacritic, based on 56 reviews from criticsand at GameSpot Quick review of XPhil Owens writes that the film lacks the memorable moments and charm that the previous installments had.
“Instead of a decent story, Fast X is a rehashing of plot threads and set pieces from past films… Fast X is an exhausting experience. Like Fate and F9, it’s overstuffed and more concerned with fan service and family growth than telling a decent story. The action is great and the CGI is often terrible.”
