A few years ago was announced this Eternals director Chloe Zhao wanted to direct a Dracula– An inspired film described as a “futuristic sci-fi western”.
I wondered if this project is really happening, and in a recent interview The Hollywood Reporterhe offered an update, saying, “Yeah, I’m writing a script right now.”
When the project was first announced, the director said, “I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other that they embody. I am thrilled to be working with Donna, Peter and the Universal team to reimagine such a beloved character.”
Peter Kramer, president of Universal Pictures, added, “Chloe’s singular lens shines a light on overlooked and misunderstood stories. We are thrilled to be working with him as he reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created.”
About a year after the project was announced, Zhao spoke about his vision for the project, saying, “I love that you have a question mark at the end — ‘sci-fi Western’? Nope.” , I love that. Ditto. Looking at Jessica Bruder’s book (Nomadland) and really looking behind the pages, discovering the meaning and essence behind each page. I’m a huge fan of the book. And seeing what essence I can find (in Dracula) and then I can reimagine this really beloved character that I love so much.”
While I didn’t care for the Eternals, I can’t help but wonder how Zhao will deal with Dracula in his next project. At least it looks like it’s going to be fun!
While we wait for this project, audiences can enjoy a new movie inspired by Dracula Renfield, in which Nicolas Cage plays the role of the Dark Lord. This looks fun!
