House of thieves and Airplane director Christian Gudegast intends to write and direct a new film based on the mixed martial artist Royce Gracie and the birth of the Ultimate Fighting Championship. If you’re into MMA, this is a fun story for a great movie!

The Untitled Project “takes place on the night when Royce Grecie proved that Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu was the most effective fighting style that would eventually become a staple of today’s UFC mixed martial arts.” The story also recounts “Gracie’s UFC 1 debut on November 12, 1993, when the fighter accomplished the unthinkable in the organization’s inaugural event.”

Gracie defeated three fighters that night, and it is considered the UFC’s birthday. “Deriving from Japanese jiu-jitsu, which originated in the samurai tradition, Gracie Jiu-Jitsu took shape in Brazil in the 1920s when Japanese fighter Mitsuyo Maeda moved to Brazil from Japan and began training under Carlos Gracie, Royce’s uncle. It was Carlos and Royce’s father, along with his younger brother Helio, who continued the tradition in their family and made the sport internationally famous.

Gracie said of the project: “I remember every detail of that night, the intensity of it was palpable, but even then I didn’t appreciate its incredible impact and the significance it would carry for years to come. not just for me, but for the martial arts world. Everything I am is because of jiu-jitsu and I’m excited for the world to hear my story.

The project was organized by Tucker Tooley Entertainment and the producer Tucker Tooley (We are the Millers, the house of thieves) said: “Before Royce Gracie first fought in the UFC, the established fighting world was all about boxing. As the world watched his family defeat three fighting champions in one night using the Gracie Jiu-Jitsu method, the UFC was born.” , says Tooley. “The moment was as significant for the martial arts world as NWA’s release of Straight Outta Compton was for the hip-hop world—a seismic shift that birthed a new and profound genre.”

Gudegast, a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, added, “I’ve been telling this story for 25 years after witnessing UFC1 and being amazed by it, and at the same time having the privilege of training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. jitsu and Vale Tudo with the Royce family. I believe what Royce accomplished that night is one of the greatest sporting feats of all time. He and his family are endlessly fascinating because they embody the spirit of a true samurai from another time. I have nothing but respect for Royce as a man and a fighter, and all of the Gracies as the godfathers of martial arts.

Gudegast is currently in production on House of Thieves 2: Panther , and he will begin this new project after wrapping it up.
