A car struck 22 Los Angeles County sheriff’s recruits during a training session around dawn Wednesday, seriously injuring five, authorities said.

A total of 23 people were injured, including the driver, Los Angeles County Fire Department spokeswoman Capt. Sheila Kelliher said.

In addition to five seriously injured, four have medium-severe injuries, and 14 have minor injuries. The driver is among the slightly injured, she said.

The accident happened at dawn Wednesday in suburban Whittier, where the STAR Explorer Training Academy is located.

A TV news helicopter broadcast showed a large fire and ambulance response, a vehicle on the sidewalk as well as numerous individuals nearby in uniformed exercise clothing.

The Sheriff’s Department said in a statement that the rookie class was struck by a vehicle around 6:26 a.m. during practice.

“We don’t have a reason,” Kelliher said. “We don’t have any other information about how the driver lost control, so at this point that’s the basic information we can share with you.”
